The body of a white woman, probably in her 40s, has been found in the Licking River near the 4th Street bridge.
The body was retrieved at about 9:50 a.m. today from the east shore of the river, just south of the bridge by Campbell County Water Rescue.
The Campbell County Coroner confirmed the gender of the body, and said the body has been identified. But the name was not released pending notification of next-of-kin. Officials would not say whether they believe foul play was involved. An autopsy is planned.
Here's how the body was discovered:
The Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club's girls team was just getting into river at 8:45 a.m. to practice.
About 100 yards downstream, team coach Andy Piepmeier spotted the body -- but did not tell the girls, who did not see it, according to Natalie Ruppert, president of the rowing club.
He called police while the girls rowed on. The boys' practice, which had been scheduled for later in the morning, was cancelled.
Newport police are investigating.
