(Cincinnati, OH) – It’s party-time Saturday, June 18 at Wake Nation Cincinnati as Ohio’s only cable wakeboarding park presents a full day of fun with the Liquid Force “Free For All” event, a day of music, free food, free giveaways, professional wakeboarding demonstrations and non-stop activities.

Liquid Force, the biggest name in wakeboards, vests, clothing and accessories, will provide riders with free ride passes and free rental use of its latest wakeboarding equipment during the event. Exclusive free ride time on Wake Nation’s 10-acre lake runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
During the Liquid Force “Free For All” day, the public can not only learn about the latest Liquid Force equipment, but also get personal tips and pointers from Liquid Force’s talented professional riders, such as Tom Fooshee, the reigning Wake Park World Series champion and Alliance Wakeboard magazine’s 2010 Rider of the Year.

In addition to meeting the Liquid Force pros, the public can enjoy great music with a live DJ, free food courtesy of Chipotle and special prize giveaways.

“The Free For All event is a great opportunity for the public to come out to Wake Nation Cincinnati, learn to ride, meet the top professionals in the sport, and get tons of giveaways…all for free,” said Wake Nation co-owner Peter Kennedy. “For those without boards and equipment, there will be new Liquid Force demo boards and vests available to use.”
Opened in 2009 in Fairfield’s Joyce Park, Wake Nation Cincinnati is Ohio’s only watersports’ park where riders can wakeboard, wakeskate, kneeboard and water ski around a 10-acre lake without a boat. Experienced and beginning riders are pulled around the lake by an overhead cable system running 18-20 miles per hour.

In addition to the 10-acre main lake, Wake Nation Cincinnati has a second body of water called the Practice Pond, which is a smaller lake featuring an “easy start” ride system. The Practice Pond is designed to give children ages five and up and beginners of all ages a place to learn to ride a wakeboard at a slower speed than on the main lake. When the Practice Pond opened last year, it was the first of its kind in the USA.

Wake Nation Cincinnati will operate daily through October. Summer hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. daily except on Mondays when opening time is noon. At Wake Nation Cincinnati, both parking and admission are FREE. The park is a “pay as you play” facility with ride time starting at $25 for two hours. Rental equipment, private lessons, group discounts and birthday parties are available

As the season grows closer and closer, it’s time to man up and take your riding to the next level. I am going let you in on the secret to stomping your first invert: the tantrum. Special thanks to our incredible site admin, alteczen, for demonstrating perfect form and execution as he models the trick for us below.

Now, the first thing to think about when considering your first invert is how you execute a wake to wake jump. I hate to burst your bubble, but a tantrum might not be your best choice for a first invert.

For those of you who can consistently hold an edge through the top of the wake, i would suggest trying a h/s backroll as your first invert. This will come much easier for you. Does this mean that you can’t try a tantrum for your first invert? No, not at all, but like I said, a backroll will most likely come easier..

For those of you who struggle a little with holding an edge to the top of the wake, a tantrum will most likely come easiest.

The Trip Flip

The first thing you need to think about before attempting this trick is the approach. For a tantrum, you will use what is called a ‘trip flip’ edge to initiate the trick. The trip flip is exactly what the name says it is. You literally trip off the wake in order to initiate your rotation. I believe that in ‘The Book’ instructional series, they compare a trip flip edge to rolling backwards into a curb on rollerskates. What will happen when you hit the curb? The curb will trip you, and flip you. The difference between this and ‘tripping’ off the wake is that when you edge into the wake, and right before you hit the wake, you let off your edge, which will initiate the trip flip rotation.

Step 1:

You want to start by taking a seated, somewhat aggressive cut into the wake. I highly emphasize cutting in a seated position.

Step 2:

This step is easily the most important part of executing this trick. As you approach the wake in a seated position, once you are about a couple feet or so from the wake, you want to let off your edge, stand tall and flatten out. Really think about standing tall out of that seated position, and digging in with your toes in order to initiate the trip.

Step 3:

This is the part where most people mess up. When coming into step two, most people think you have to ‘huck’ the flip, and physically throw your body into the tantrum. WRONG. If you trip correctly, you shouldn’t even have to worry about the flip. The wake will do this for you. After all, this is the whole point of the trip flip, and if you trip your tantrum correctly, as displayed, it will result in a straight up pop.

Once you come off the wake, concentrate on looking over your rear shoulder. A lot of people try and flip straight back and get hung up. Remember that you land edging away from the boat, so you need to land with your board at an angle to the boat, which is why you NEED to throw your head over that back shoulder.

Step 4:

Now, as you come around, you should think about spotting your landing. If your head is looking over your back shoulder as I explained in the last step, you should be in an ideal position for this. Spotting your landing is not easy at first. It takes some getting used to, but your ability to spot the landing so easily is what makes the tantrum such an easy invert.

Step 5:

At this point you should be thinking about spotting your landing, and getting stoked, cause your just about you ride away from your first invert!

Step 6:

Once you’re about to land back on your feet, think about edging out from the boat right when you land. Don’t land flat. You need to keep cutitng out with the boat to keep your momentum going.

And that’s it! You just rode away from your first invert!

Wake Nation’s weekly grind series this year was filled with big tricks, hard falls, and some really fun thursday nights. This year was the first year for both cablewakeboard.com’s national point chase, as well as the weekly grind series (which was a part of the national points chase).

The national points chase included seven different cable parks across the country who all held tournaments every 5 weeks. Every week riders could get points by competing in their home cable park’s weekly tournament series. When the five week series came to an end each riders points were tallied up to figure out both the overall winners, as well as those who qualified for cable wakeboard national championshipships.

This year at Wake Nation’s weekly grind series, there were 51 different riders who all fit into their respective divisions: begginer, intermediate, advanced, and pro/outlaw.

The top 5 winners from each division will all have the opportunity to compete at the Texas Ski Ranch for national championships on October 9th and 10th. The top three winners from each division will also count towards an overall team score for their home cable park.

Thanks to everyone who made this wonderful event possible, and we look forward to seeing everyone in Texas this October! Standings from the weekly grind series are as follows:

You can grind coffee…grind your teeth….or, at Wake Nation Cincinnati, you can grind your board for prizes and trophies as part of a national wakeboarding tournament this summer.

In wakeboarding terminology, to grind is to ride a board on an obstacle in the water. Beginning Thursday, June 17 (and continuing for the next four weeks), wakeboarders young and old can enter Wake Nation Cincinnati’s “Weekly Grind Series” with an opportunity to move on in a national competition.

All nine cable wakeboarding parks in the USA are participating in the event, called the National Points Chase Competition, sponsored by CableWakeboard.com.

At the end of the summer, the top three Wake Nation Cincinnati winners in each competition category will qualify to represent Wake Nation Cincinnati and the entire region in the 2010 National Points Chase Championship in Texas.

Event scoring will be based on composition, complexity and proficiency of each rider’s run on jumps, obstacles and open water. Scoring will be done by Wake Nation Cincinnati judges.

Experienced riders and even beginners can enter the competition in five different divisions: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Pro, and Wakeskate. A sixth division, Extreme Kneeboarding, is a fun exhibition-only event. There are weekly trophies and prizes for winners.

Dates and times for the Weekly Grind Series are Thursday, June 17; Friday, June 25; Thursday, July 1; Thursday, July 8, and Thursday, July 15. Each competition begins at 6 p.m. Cost to enter is $15 per event, or $60 for all five events. To enter, contestants can sign up at Wake Nation Cincinnati or call (513) 887-WAKE.

Located at 201 Joe Nuxhall Way in Fairfield’s Joyce Park, the Wake Nation Cincinnati watersports’ complex opened to rave reviews one year ago as Ohio’s only watersports’ park where riders can wakeboard, water ski, kneeboard, and wakeskate around a 10-acre lake WITHOUT A BOAT.

Riders are pulled around the oval lake at speeds of 18-20 miles per hour by a circulating, overhead cable system that runs 35 feet above the water.

New for 2010 is the Practice Pond, a second smaller lake with an “easy start” system that makes learning to ride easier than ever before. During its first season of operation, Wake Nation Cincinnati received numerous awards, including prestigious “Best Of” awards from Ohio Magazine, Cincinnati Magazine and Cincy Magazine.

At Wake Nation Cincinnati, both parking and admission are FREE. The park is a “pay as you play” facility with ride time starting at $25 for two hours. Rental equipment, private lessons, group discounts and birthday parties are available. Season Passes are also available for purchase.

(Cincinnati, OH) – Mark down Sunday, June 6 as a “don’t miss” day of fun as Wake Nation Cincinnati celebrates its first birthday with a Liquid Force “Free For All” day of music, free food, free giveaways, professional exhibitions and non-stop activities at the award-winning watersports’ park.

Opened a year ago in Fairfield’s Joyce Park, Wake Nation Cincinnati is Ohio’s only watersports’ park where riders can wakeboard, wakeskate, kneeboard and water ski around a 10-acre lake without a boat. Experienced and beginning riders are pulled around the lake by an overhead cable system running 18-20 miles per hour.

During the Liquid Force “Free For All” day, the public can learn about the latest Liquid Force equipment, and get tips and pointers form Liquid Force’s professional riders — champion wakeboarder Bob Soven and wakeskater Danny Hampson. The talented pros will be on hand for wakeboarding and wakeskating demonstrations, meeting the public and answering questions. Liquid Force is the biggest name in wakeboarding boards, vests, clothing and accessories.

In addition to meeting the Liquid Force pros, the public can enjoy great music with a live DJ, free food courtesy of Chipotle and special prize giveaways.

In a special promotion, Liquid Force had offered to provide riders with free ride passes and free rental use of its latest wakeboarding equipment during the event. This exclusive ride time runs from noon until 6 p.m.

All priority reservation spots for this free offer were taken within 48 hours after the promotion was announced on Wake Nation Cincinnati’s website; however interested riders can still sign-up for the “standby” list the day of the event, should additional riding slots become available. Even those currently without reservations can still have a great time at Wake Nation Cincinnati enjoying the music, food and celebration atmosphere. Plus, there will be two sessions on June 6 when the general public can hit the water — –- 10 a.m.-noon, and 6 p.m.-8 p.m. (normal pricing in effect.)

Founded in 1995, Liquid Force quickly became the leader in wakeboard products and apparel. Supported by a superior team of athletes, Liquid Force is dedicated to relentless innovation, progressive design, maximum functionality and unparalleled quality.

Wake Nation Cincinnati will operate daily through October. Summer hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. (Check website for details.) At Wake Nation Cincinnati, both parking and admission are FREE. The park is a “pay as you play” facility with ride time starting at $25 for two hours. Rental equipment, private lessons, group discounts and birthday parties are available.

In last year’s inaugural season, Wake Nation Cincinnati received numerous awards, including three prestigious “Best Of” awards from Ohio Magazine, Cincinnati Magazine and Cincy Magazine.

Wakeboarding is an expensive sport/ hobby. Not only do you need a board, bindings, jacket, and rope; but you need access to a boat (at least until Wake Nation dropped into town)! If you can’t afford to run out and spend $20k+ on a wakeboard boat it’s essential that you meet people who have one and are looking for “thirds”. Once you get invited as a third this article will serve as a guide to help ensure you get invited back. By no means is this an official set of rules and other boat owners might feel differently about certain aspects. However these guidelines are a good starting point to help ensure that when it comes time to find an extra rider you are at the top of the list.

Be Casual about Asking – It is okay to ask from time to time if the boat owner is looking for an extra rider. However you don’t want to be the guy or gal who calls or emails everyday asking when the boat is going out next. Be patient and when the time comes where extra space is available you might be the one who gets the call.

Show Up On Time – Boat owners usually plan their day on the water. Sure there are times when they have the full day, but most of the time they are there for a set time period (for example 5:00pm – 8:00pm). With this in mind you don’t want to keep the owner hanging out on the dock waiting for you to arrive. Running fifteen minutes behind may not seem like a big deal; however on a week night session it could mean one person only getting one set instead of two!

Bring Yourself Only – If you were lucky enough to be invited out don’t ask to bring friends. Most people invite enough riders so that everyone is able to get a fair amount of water time (usually a minimum of 2 sets per person although this can vary). An extra unexpected rider often means another rider gets their water time cut short. The one exception to this is non-riders. Most owners don’t mind extra people as long as there is ample room in the boat and they do not want to ride. But ask first and mention they don’t want to ride!

Bring Own Gear (if possible) – If you cannot bring your own gear make sure the boat owner knows this. This one is a toss-up in my opinion. I’ve met a ton of people who don’t mind loaning their gear but I’ve also met plenty of people that think twice about letting someone else use a set-up they’ve dropped $500 plus on. As for me I don’t mind loaning my setup. However if you borrow my gear for a month (2-3 times out) it may be time for you to invest in your own setup if you enjoy riding that much. It is imperative if you damage borrowed gear that you offer to replace it! Most of the gear carries a lifetime warranty and paying to have it fixed will be unnecessary. But make sure you offer and intend to cover the cost in the event you need to do so. If you don’t like the thought of this bring your own gear.

Bring Drinks or Snacks – The boat owner is supplying the boat, pays for the maintenance, owns a gas-guzzling tow vehicle, pays insurance, and despite the next item – usually pays for most of the fuel . Therefore it’s a really nice gesture when a third brings snacks or extra drinks to share. It’s not necessary but definitely goes a long way. If you do not bring anything don’t help yourself to the cooler in the boat unless offered. Most owners don’t mind you snagging a drink or some pretzels but make sure you make up for it next time and bring some extras to share.

Bring Gas Money – As noted above the boat owner spends quite a bit paying for and maintaining the boat. So if you ride make sure you chip in for gas! You wouldn’t expect to go snowboarding and your buddy to buy your lift ticket! With gas prices peaking at almost $5 a gallon in the summer of 2008 it was nothing to spend $100 a day in fuel on the water. If gas is $3-4 a gallon I would suggest $10 per set. If gas stays under $3 a gallon $15 for two sets might be adequate. When in doubt be overly generous!

Alcohol Use – Some boat owner don’t mind people enjoying a few drinks responsibly on the boat. However if it is your first time out I would recommend against bringing alcoholic beverages until you get a feel for if the owner minds or not. If you are unsure then ask! It’s their boat and they are responsible for what the people on board are doing. Some lakes have laws against alcoholic beverage use and you don’t want to put the owner in a difficult situation.

Smoking – In my boat I don’t mind if people smoke as long as they are sitting away from me and the boat is NOT moving. But the rule on my boat is “if you burn it, you buy it”. So if your cigarette falls and burns a hole in the seat guess what… you are buying me a new skin. Other owners may feel differently so before you assume you can light up ask!

Wait Your Turn – Be patient and wait until someone asks you to go. Always let the other riders take their turn first. You are the new guy!

Limit Your Water Time – Take note on how many people in the boat are riding and how long the owner plans on staying out. You don’t want to be the guy who takes a really, really long set – especially if you just got invited out. Just keep in mind there other riders in the boat!

Enjoy Yourself – I’ll be the first to admit I like to take a set, ride well, and progress. However there are times I go out and nothing goes as planned – I ride horrible! With this being the case if I climb into the boat all bummed out it as an effect on the entire mood of the boat. So if you go out and don’t ride your best don’t sweat it! Have a good time and just enjoy being out on the water.

Never Complain – More than likely you have not had the chance to ride behind every wakeboard boat out there. So don’t be surprised if it takes you a set or two (or three) to get used to the wake. No matter what the case is do not complain! Every boat owner is proud of their boat. The last thing you want to do is offend them by complaining about the wake size, wake shape, etc.

Clean Up – This is one of the most important items. Do not climb out of the boat at the end of the day, hand the owner gas money (see above), and take off! To keep a boat looking good it needs to be wiped down and cleaned up. Help unload equipment, pickup garbage, and wipe down the boat. If you are unsure of what you can do to help then ask!

Believe it or not good “thirds” are hard to find. Hopefully the above guidelines will make you a third that most boat owner think of first when it times to finding people to ride with. These guidelines may seem like a lot of “rules” to follow but most of it is just common sense and courtesy. Best of luck!

If any of you are like me I’m sure you are as psyched about the upcoming Winter months as I am (please note the sarcasm). And as much as I do enjoy the Holiday season it is the months of January and February that make Winter the most dreaded time of year for me. Sure hitting Perfect North is good times and the cold weather gives my body a chance to heal. However once January hits I spend the rest of Winter counting down the days to Spring.

Today I got a chance to walk the construction site at Wake Nation, the new cable park in Cincinnati, Ohio with Peter and Nick. Peter and Nick gave me the official tour and I got a chance to take some pictures to share. They also supplied me with some renderings of the building interior and boardshop.

I’m sure these pictures will make most of you as excited about next Spring as I got when I saw the construction site first-hand. And you’ll surely agree that it’s going to be a long, long Winter.

This was the first ever college student only Wakeboard Tournament hosted by the University of Kentucky Wakeboard Club. The tournament was a huge success for the Club. Awarding $3000.00 in cash prizes and over $2500.00 in soft goods provided by sponsors. Door prizes went out to all riders and no one went home empty handed. Colleges were represented from as far as Orlando, FL and St. Louis, MO.
